The Foley Bulb Method of Inducing Labor

Technically the Foley Bulb is a “Trans-cervical Foley catheter for preinduction cervical ripening…” according to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

For a device that’s been around for so long,  its effectiveness is really quite confusing and complicated.   The data I’ve found is mixed.

For instance, the only historical reference I could find as to when this procedure was first used for induction of labor dates to around 1987 at the University of Pennsylvania hospital. Read more »

VBAMC – Vaginal Birth After Multiple C-Sections

For women who have had multiple c-sections, that is more than 2, they want to know if it’s possible to try for a VBAC or to be more specific, a VBAMC,  ‘vaginal birth after multiple c-sections’.

I once had a woman ask me, who already had 5 c-sections, if it was possible for her to have another child naturally.  This is not an unusual question, in fact there are many women who have had several c-sections and want to experience having a natural childbirth at least once.

I can so relate to them not wanting to experience yet another surgery, but I’m not an expert.  I can only go by the facts and experiences I see before me, as is true for any lay or even professional person.

Here are a few things that may help if you are confronting this same decision… Read more »

Having a Planned C-Section Could Mean A Better Sex Life

Imagine that!  A planned C-section could mean an improved sex life.

Yep,  that’s the conclusion drawn from a study done with over 900 healthy first time mothers along with their husbands who were questioned about their sexual function.

The researchers conducting the test used a female sexual function index for the women and a similar index for the men which are questionnaires developed specifically for measuring sexual function.

Interestingly enough the tests showed that women who had planned c-section, note the keyword here is ‘planned’, scored higher on the sexual function index than women who had vaginal births or emergency c-sections.   You can read more about the study here:

The study clearly needs further research but just for fun…

Walk For Life – We Made It!

We had a great time at the ‘Walk For Life’ in San Diego, Ca on Sunday. The walk was short but what a great cause.  The Walk for Life Women’s center will be getting several thousand dollars that will benefit new moms all over the county.

I met up with my good friend Sheila who offered so much to my ‘Worry Free C-Section’ book.  Sheila’s the maternity nurse at Sharp Memorial here in San Diego and what a great caregiver she is.  Mom’s ask for her by name!

Group Shot - Whew! We made it!

Walk for Life – Pregnancy

Walk for life

This Sunday Oct. 11, 2009 I’ll be walking for the Walk for Life  Pregnancy 2009 in San Diego. I’m excited as this will be my first walk for the birthline of San Diego organization.

Birthline is a local organization and pregnancy support center that helps women, single or married, to have their babies rather than opt for an abortion. This is such a great cause and I’m more than excited to be donating my time and treasure to such a great organization.  I think it will be a great time to come together, get in a little exercise and hopefully make a difference in someone’s life.

If you live in San Diego, Ca. I’d love to see you out there. The walk is only 2 miles, no hills :-) and takes place in Mission Bay Park from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

If you want to walk yourself just get a few sponsors and come on out, you can fill out the paperwork there. You will provide the names and mailing addresses of your sponsors when you arrive and they will be billed, no need to bring money to the event.

If you would like to sponsor me! ;-) You can email me at elizabeth at worry-free-c-section.com (change at to @) with your name and mailing address, I will put you down as a sponsor and you will be billed.  Even $1 a mile will help a woman in need of support.

For anyone that can come out I’ll see you there.  I’ll be back next week with pictures!

Here’s where you can find out more about Birthline of San Diego http://www.birthlineofsandiego.org
