Sex After A C-Section – Can We Do it Yet?

You may be thinking ‘How much time do I have before the next feed?’ and your spouse may be thinking, ‘Is she up for it tonight?”   Of course ‘IT’ means sexual intimacy….at long last!

So when is the best time to have sex after a c-section?

It’s hard to pin down exactly when you can have sex after a c-section, however most practitioners would agree that a new mother should give herself ample time to recover.  This is most commonly decided to be about six weeks.

Your body has been through a lot of trauma, and even though six weeks may seem like a lot most husbands will understand, especially after the sacrifices that you have made.

What we are concerned about is not only about the bleeding that might occur on the outside when you decide to resume sexual activities with your partner, it is also the bleeding that might occur on the inside from your healing uterus.

Bleeding can occur and but it’s how quickly it stops and this is completely dependent on your body.

That is why you need the ‘go ahead’ from your doctor. But even then, there are some precautions to look out for. For example, be gentle during sex because the site of the incision is still tender. Choose positions that won’t be painful or uncomfortable.  It’s is the conventional position that causes the most pain for the woman.

Remember, you’ve just had a baby and your body is still recovering, not only from the C-section, but also from all the hormones that’s have been surging through your blood stream. The hormones may cause some dryness in the vaginal area which can also cause pain during intercourse. Use lubricants if necessary.

If you are breastfeeding, that may also be another concern but it should not stop either one of you from having pleasurable sex after a C-section. These are just a few things to look out for but never an obstacle.

Hi Tina, It could cause problems but if you are feeling OK, it’s probably fine. Remember you have both internal as well as external stitches and it’s the internal ones that you don’t want to break open. I’d try to take it easy for awhile and if you have any unusual bleeding or pain, let your doctor know :-)
