Sometimes after having a baby you can retain water, but this should subside within a few days.
If you were given pitocin this can also cause swelling. Pitocin, also known as Oxytocin, is a natural hormone that causes the uterus to contract. Side effects of Oxytocin can include excessive swelling. This swelling should go down in about a week, if not check with your doctor.
Sometimes if you are given extra IV fluids this can also cause swollen feet.
Warning signs of Swelling
If you experience pain or swelling and redness in your calves, this may be a sign of blood clots so call your doctor right away.
If your feet are so swollen that they actually hurt, call your doctor. This may not be a serious problem however you should probably still tell your doctor about the swelling, they may want to check your blood pressure.
