C-Section or Vaginal Birth – Which is Better?

With all the c-sections performed today, you might be tempted to ask yourself, which is better?  Having a vaginal birth or a C-Section?

Obviously for all around health reasons, having a vaginal birth is better.  It’s better for mom, no surgery, and there are a number of benefits for baby to be born vaginally.

But c-sections have their purpose and they have saved many lives in the wake of complications or health issues that arise.  There are other less pressing reasons for having a c-section that  include things like  choosing to have a c-section for convenience or fear of the pain of childbirth or Tokophobia.

As to which is better, the c-section or a vaginal birth, it often depends on the circumstances, both physical and mental.

For example,  some women  consider having a c-section easier.  However it’s important to point out that c-section recovery takes longer and is more difficult.

When trying to decide which is better, take into consideration all the aspects of having a c-section, the c-section risks, the c-section procedure itself, the recovery and the effects it may have on your baby.  For example,  how quickly do you bounce back from illness, how do you deal with any kind of pain, how might you cope with caring for yourself and a new born baby while recovering from surgery, how many more children you would like to have, etc.

For those that truly need a c-section, it can be a life saver, however if you suspect you may need a c-section or are considering a c-section for whatever reason, make sure you understand all the facts, carefully discuss them with your doctor and your significant other and by all means prepare yourself well.

A c-section is serious surgery but it can be a more positive experience with careful planning, avoiding the risks, understanding the options and having the right attitude.  Nothing is guaranteed but those are the steps to helping you making a decision that is right for YOU.
