Silicone Scar Sheets

Using silicone scar sheets have proven to be the  most effective treatment for reducing the appearance of  hypertrophic scars or surgical scars, especially scarring that results from having abdominal surgery.

Even though Silicone has been the most effective remedy for diminishing both hypertrophic as well as Keltoid scars, not all  silicone is effective in the same way.

For one thing Silicone comes in several forms, specifically gels, ointments and sheets, however the silicon scar sheets have shown to be much more  effective than other forms for minimizing the look of an ugly scar.

With cesarean scars for instance,  studies have shown that Silicone Scar sheets have been much more effective in reducing the appearance of these types of Hypertrophic  scars.

In fact, in clinical studies using silicone scar sheets, the diminish rate for scars that are less than a year old was as much as 85%, and scars that were over 10 years old the diminish rate was about 65%.  The results actually indicated that the newer the scar, the better the result.

These Silicone sheets are a convenient, cost effective alternative to removing scars surgically.  The silicon scar sheets are also reusable.

How do the silicone scar sheets actually work?

In order for a hypertrophic or a Keltoid scar to diminish in appearance, it needs the right healing elements, those elements are oxygen, moisture and pressure.

The main benefit of silicone sheeting compared to silicon gels and ointments is that silicone sheets put direct pressure on the scar, this has proven to be what minimizes the scar’s appearance.

By completely covering the scar with the silicone sheets you are allowing just the right amount of air, moisture and pressure to fade and minimize  your scar creating an optimal healing environment.

The silicone occlusive sheets used by Rejuveness for example, uses medical-grade, pure silicone sheeting.  Silicone sheets such as these will smooth, soften and flatten scars so that they will take on a more normal texture and color.  They will also relieve the burning and itching that is so characteristic of scarring.

Studies on how silicone itself actually works suggest that the static electricity that the silicon creates along with helping hold in just the right amount of moisture is what helps align the collagen fibers creating a lighter flatter appearance.

There isn’t anything that can completely erase a surgical or injury scar, even plastic surgery can leave the trace of a scar, however at the moment silicone is the best remedy we have for diminishing the discoloration and the raised effect that scars can produce without having cosmetic surgery.

The beauty of the silicone scar sheets is they are applied directly on the scar and it stays on until you are ready to shower or remove it.  Using the silicone sheets a minimum of 12 -24 hours a day for 8-12 weeks along with proper care of the sheets will yield the best results.
